Davy...Davy Crockett!

Back in 2003 I was a cast member at Walt Disney World as part of the WDW College Program.  I worked at The Missing Link Sausage Company on Pleasure Island (very glamorous).  The job wasn't that bad because my hours were from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. which meant I could wake up as late as I wanted and still go to the Magic Kingdom before work.  Most of the time that is....

One week I had to work The Festival of the Masters which meant my schedule was now 7 a.m. to 7p.m.  This wouldn't have been bad at all if it wasn't for Fess Parker, Disney's Davy Crockett being at Epcot at the same time.  Fess owns a winery and was speaking at the Food and Wine Festival about his brand.  The closest I was getting to Fess that day was selling his wine at a tent in Down Town Disney.

It was then that I decided I was going to contact Fess Parker by mail and hope that he would write me back.  I contacted some people though his wines website and they gave me an address where I could write to Fess.  A few weeks later guess what came for me in the mail......

How great is that!  What a swell guy!

The Blank Check House

After the success of Home Alone movie studios did not waste anytime copying the formula (kid outsmarts bad guys).  While the worst offender was probably Three Ninjas, Disney was also guilty with Blank Check.  They even used it as a selling point! I saw Blank Check in the theater, I remember because it was the only time in my movie going life that the theater manager came out and talked to us about how the movie was filmed in Texas (which is where I live).  So, on a recent trip to Austin, I stopped by the Blank Check house. Here is how it appeared in the film: And today: As you can see, they've done quite a bit of remodeling. Not to mention the heavy plant growth which makes it almost unrecognizable. The old garage door is now a window The original entry way has been completely removed. This is the front door now: I drove around to the side and found the back gate open.  In the film, the back yard had a pool, go cart t

Old Photo Mystery

I found this photo in a stack of old pictures my Dad found when he worked at a retirement home.   Here's what is written on the back. I looked at old St. Louis photos and I guessed it was the State Hospital.  Well I sent the picture to a St. Louis Historical Society and they actually researched it for me! I did some research on your photos, and I think they are of the City Infirmary which was located at 5900 Arsenal Street. It was also called the City Isolation Hospital and U.S. General Hospital #40.  It was on the same street as the State Hospital (5300 Arsenal Street), so you were very close! The architecture matches some photographs we have of the City Infirmary much more closely than that of the State Hospital. I also looked up the names of the nurses from the back of your photo in a 1914 City Directory and found a Bessie Bray listed as a nurse, an Alice Hachard listed as a housekeeper, and a Nellie Hatchard listed as an attendant all at the Infirmary.

Jumanji Film Locations

While I was in New Hampshire last week, I stopped in Keene to take some Jumanji comparison shots. Let's start at the beginning of the film. In the opening scene Alan Parrish rides his bike past a statue of his ancestor, Angus Parrish.  I had been to Keene once before and knew there was a statue in this square, so I assumed they just attached a fake plaque to it, I was wrong. They  built the prop statue on top of this rock fountain.  Why not just use the existing one? Here's another statue screen shot. It almost looks like they tried to brush out the actual statue in the opening shot from the film. . This Parrish shoes ad can be seen briefly in the film and appears in the back ground of the second statue picture I posted.  Here it is today. Moving onto the stampede scenes. Turns out Frank's Barber Shop is still there too. So is this old coke mural Run Kirsten! Stampede!
